faq  Can you describe Wagner College? Do you want to see pictures of Wagner College? Just surf around our website. Wagner College is located in the north east of Staten Island (which is one of the 5 Boroughs NYC is made of) and is built like a small village. It is a very protected place even though it is not surrounded by walls. Security Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. All students and group leaders receive a map and on “day one” they are show around by our staff to get acquainted with Campus and its facilities, Cafeteria, Dorms, Classrooms, Library, Computer Center, Sport Complex (swimming pool, gym, fitness center, baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts), etc. Do you need a badge/ID to enter Wagner College?All guests will receive an ID badge which allows you to access all facilities.
The ID must be shown as you enter all locations (dorms, cafeteria, library, sports facilities, computer center etc.). They will also be given electronic keys to their bedrooms. Access to the dorms without both ID and electronic key is simply impossible. Is Wagner College under surveillance?
Security Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
There is a number – that all guests are given – which can be called anytime. How do you access your bedroom?
To begin with you will have to swipe your electronic key to access the building where dorms are located. Then you will show the person guarding the entrance your ID.
To enter the room you will then need the electronic key. Nonetheless we always remind everybody to keep their bedrooms locked. How are the rooms?
Of all things at Wagner College dorms and bedroom are the most “American standard” thing. Campus is not pretty, it is beautiful. Dorms are a little bare-naked.
That means that rooms – mostly doubles, a very few triples - are very simply furnished: two beds (or bunk-bed), a desk, chair, closet. Keep in mind that you won’t spend much time in your room anyway. Do you provide towels, linens, hairdryer?
You will find a regular size towel on your bed, for you to use. However we suggest you bring with you either a bathrobe or a bath (good for the shower and the swimming pool).
Yes, linens are provided. However they will not be changed unless it is requested (with an additional fee). They can be washed though. No hairdryer. Remember that the electric system in the US is different from the European one. Most devices nowadays have built-in transformers (computers, cameras etc.) and you will only need an adaptor. For some devices though (like hairdryers) you may need a transformer.
What about the bathrooms/showers
They are shared bathrooms and showers, on the floor. The ratio is 1/5 people.
At what time is curfew on Campus? And silence in the dorms?
All minors are always accompanied and watched over by our Tutors and by Group Leaders. They will return from their trips from Manhattan and vicinities whenever the Group Leader decides. You can always access the dorms, at any hour. By midnight everybody will be inside the dorm building, in silence. Some Emerald Staff member always spend the night at the dorms, the ensure order, silence and offer help in case of need.
What about breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Is there a menu’? What about special dietary needs? Breakfast, Brunch (on Saturdays and Sundays) and lunch will always be served at the Cafeteria. Meals at Wagner are way above American average. Dinner will either be at the Cafeteria or off campus if the guests happen to be out for the evening (which is frequent). In this case our Assistants will have at his disposal a budget to pay for dinner. The Cafeteria is divided in “islands”: pasta, meat, pizza, vegetables, fruit, sweets, ice cream, soft drinks, milk, coffee. The variety is amazing! Guests can help themselves at will, eat and drink as much as they want. The only rule is that neither food nor drinks can be taken outside of the Cafeteria.
Here’s a sample menu: Breakfast: Lunch/Dinner: All dietary needs will be listed on the enrollment form and taken care of. At what time will breakfast, lunch and dinner be?
Can the schedule be re-arranged? Breakfast is always before 9:00AM, since at 9:00AM school begins.
Brunch (Saturday and Sunday) is served from 11:00AM to 1:00PM. Lunch (Monday through Friday) is from 12:00PM. Dinner: TBA if the group is touring the City. On Campus the Cafeteria opens for dinner at 4:30PM and closes at 6:00PM. There’s no reason to re-arrange the schedule for breakfast and lunch. Brunch can be replaced with a quick breakfast if a day-long trip is planned for that day. Are drinks included or must they be paid for?
All drinks (water, soft drinks, juice, milk, coffee) are included, and guests can drink as much as they want.
Is there a laundry service? How does it work? For how much? There are washing machines in the basement of the dorms. Our staff will show you how to use them. You will use “quarters” ( 25 cent coins) to make them work. How many guests are there at Emerald at Wagner during the summer?
Where are they from? We go from 150 to 350. Are the students supposed to bring any kind of material like notepads, pen, etc.?
What do you provide?Students will receive a textbook, a notepad, pen and everything they may need to attend school. Books will be returned once the course is over. What do students receive upon their arrival?
The “Welcome Kit” includes the “Student Handbook”, maps NYC, Subway, Wagner College …), notepad, general information, emergency numbers plus their ID Name tag, “Unlimited Metrocard”, “Meal Card”, “Room Key”, “Computer password” (which allows you to access all computers on campus).
How are sports activities run? What facilities do you have?
Who directs the students during their sports activities?
Do students have to pay extra money to use sports facilities? Emerald at Wagner offers beautiful sports facilities: indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, tennis courts (bring your own racket and balls!).
Our staff will accompany the students during their sport-time and help them organize the activities. They will also introduce those who want to “real American sports” like baseball and football. Emerald at Wagner offers also super-qualified Milan Soccer Camp. No, access is completely free to all facilities and activities, with the exception of the Milan Camp which is a specific program. In case of need/emergency is somebody from Emerald always available?
Is there an emergency number? Absolutely! 24 hours a day. Yes, students and group leaders will be given an “emergency number” and other useful numbers.
Do you have an “emergency number” we can leave with the students’ families?
How can families get in touch with their kids?Do you provide group leaders with sim cards to allow them receiving calls from the parents? Yes, when the time comes we provide an “ultimate emergency number”, and other useful numbers.
No, we do not provide group leaders with sim cards. Our phone number at Wagner College is: 718 420 4307. You can call us anytime. However it is unlikely you will be able to talk to your children through this number, because even if campus is not huge it may be almost impossible tracking down your family members. Email remains the easiest way: students will constantly have free access to email. What the cheapest and most reasonable solution for phone calls? How do cellular phones work?
Tri-band cells work. However the cheapest way to call Europe is to buy phone cards. Our staff will assist and advise everybody on these issues.
How are boys and girls located in the dorms? Boys and girls will stay on different floors. The teachers/group leaders should stay on the same floor as the students to help maintaining order and silence at night.
What is the schedule for English classes?
Do you have one or multiple teachers? Monday through Friday, from 9:00AM to 12:00PM.
Always the same teacher. Sometimes the Director of Studies or the General Manager will visit with the class, sometimes two teachers will combine their students to run a special activity. What is the commute like from Wagner College to Manhattan?
Five-minute walk to the bust stop. Bus to the Ferry. The Ferry takes you to Manhattan by crossing a spectacular stretch between the ocean, the Hudson and East Rivers, swinging by Liberty and Ellis Island and the Verrazano Bridge … From Campus to Manhattan it will take approximately 1 hour – which is “nothing” according to New York standards. Then from Downtown Manhattan it depends on where the group plans to go.
New York City is a big City … usually language schools are located outside of the metropolitan area, so groups know from the start they will go visit Manhattan – say – twice a week. At Emerald Wagner the story is very different: you see Manhattan and the NYC bay from your window and you …want to go! Does Emerald New York issue Diplomas?
Yes, as an ESL School Certified by the Board of Education of the State of New York, Emerald issues Diplomas for all students attending its classes.
What is not included in the total price? What will have the students to pay for?
All that is listed – from school, to room and board, transportation, to all listed activities is included. Theoretically speaking students will not need to spend an extra dollar to enjoy their stay in NYC.
How often will the students leave Wagner College to go sight seeing?
Very often. A draft program will be sent to all group leaders to be examined, discussed and reshaped according to their desires and expectations. However students will spend at the most 2 afternoons and 2 evenings on Campus (unless they ask for more – which is always possible). Afternoon activities will mostly be sports-based, while in the evenings we will offer music concerts (live blues, jazz, etc.), sing-along, movies, presentations on commercial music, New York City, etc., dance …
Do you offer all day long excursions? Where? At what price?
Yes we do, even if, realistically speaking, NYC has so much to offer …
Trips can be arranged to places like Philadelphia, Woodbury Commons Outlet, Upstate New York (Hudson River Valley), Harlem for Gospel Mass, Bronx Zoo... The cost will vary depending on the number of people and calendar.

La tessera andra’ mostrata all’ingresso dei dorms, della mensa, campi sportive, computer center, etc. Gli ospiti riceveranno anche una chiave elettronica per la loro camera. L’accesso ai dorms senza la tessera e la chiave e’ praticamente impossibile.
Wagner College e’ sorvegliato? Ci sono Agenti di Sorveglianza in servizio 24 ore su 24 e 7 giorni su 7. C’e’ un numero – consegnato a tutti gli ospiti – che puo’ essere chiamato in qualsiasi momento.
Come si entra nelle camere? Per cominciare dovrai passare la tua chiave elettronica davanti al lettore per accedere all’edificio dove sono situati i dorms. Poi dovrai mostrare la tua tessera alla persona di servizio all’ingresso. Infine per entrare nella stanza avrai bisogno della chiave elettronica.
Nonostante tutto cio’, per maggior sicurezza, invitiamo sempre tutti ad assicurarsi di lasciare la porta della stanza chiusa. Come sono le stanze? Di tutto quello che troverete a Wagner College i dorms e le camere sono la cosa piu’ “standard Americana”. Il campus non e’ grazioso, e’ stupendo. I dorms sono un po’ spogli. Questo significa che le stanze – per lo piu’ doppie, una manciata di triple – sono ammobiliati molto semplicemente: due letti o un letto a castello), un tavolino, sedia, armadio a muro. Tenete a mente che nelle stanze in ogni caso ci passerete proprio poco tempo.
Fornite asciugamani, lenzuola, asciugacapelli? Troverete un asciugamano di grandezza regolare sul vostro letto. Tuttavia noi suggeriamo di portarvi il vostro accappatoio o un asciugamano o un telo da bagno (che andra’ bene sia per la doccia che la piscina). Si, troverete le lenzuola che pero’ non verranno cambiate a meno che lo richiediate (e’ previsto un costo aggiuntivo). Comunque le lenzuola potrete lavarvele. No, niente asciugacapelli. Tenete comunque a mente che il sistema elettrico Americano e’ diverso da quello Europeo. Al giorno d’oggi la maggior degli strumenti elettronici (computers, macchine fotografiche etc.) sono costruiti con un trasformatore incorporato e tutto quello di cui avrete bisogno e’ un adattatore. Per alcuni elettrodomestici tuttavia (come l’asciugacapelli) occorrera’ il trasformatore.
Come sono i bagni e le docce? Sono comuni, al piano, 1 ogni 5 ospiti
A che ora si rientra ai dorms? E il silenzio? Tutti gli ospiti minorenni saranno sempre accompagnati ed assistiti dai nostri Assistenti e dai Capi Gruppo. Tornernno dale loro visite a Manhattan etc. quando il Capo Gruppo decidera’. Si puo’ sempre accedere ai dorms a qualunque ora. A mezzanotte ognuno sara’ nelle proprie stanze, in silenzio. Alcuni operatori di Emerald saranno sempre presente la notte nei dorms per assicurare l’ordine, il silenzio e prestare assistenza in caso di bisogno.
Colazione, pranzo e cena come si svolgono? C’e’ un menu? E rispetto a particolari esigenze alimentari? Colazione, Brunch (Sabato e Domenica) e pranzo vengono seriviti alla mensa (Cafeteria). I pasti al Wagner College sono decisamente al di sopra degli standards Americani. La cena sara’ o alla mensa o fuori qualora gli ospiti quella sera siano via (il che e’ frequente). In questo caso il nostro personale mettera’ a disposizione per la cena il budget previsto. La mensa e’ suddivisa per “isole”, “aree”: pasta, carni, pizza, verdure, frutta, dolci, gelati, bibite, latte, caffe’. La varieta’ e’ notevole! Gli ospiti possono servirsi a volonta’, mangiare e bere quel che vogliono e quanto vogliono. L’unica regola e’ che ne’ bevande ne’ cibo possono essere portati fuori dalla mensa. Ecco un menu’ indicativo: Breakfast: Lunch/Dinner: Il brunch e’ una “combinazione” di breakfast e pranzo. A che ora sono colazione, pranzo e cena?
Gli orari possono essere modificati? Colazione e’ sempre prima delle 9, visto che alle 9 cominciano le lezioni. Le bevande sono incluse nel prezzo o no?
Tutte le bevande (acqua, bibite, succhi, latte, caffe) sono incluse e gli ospiti possono bere tutto quel che vogliono.

Ci sono lavatrici nel seminterrato dei dormitori. Il nostro personale vi mostrera’ come farne uso. Per il funzionamento occorrono monete da 25 cents (“quarters”).
Ci sono anche asciugatrici. Quanti studenti ci sono all’Emerald Wagner College durante l’estate?
Di quale provenienza? Andiamo da 150 a 350 studenti.
La maggior parte vengono da Italia, Spagna, Francia. Gli studenti devono portare cose come quaderno per appunti, penna etc?
Emerald che cosa fornisce? Gli studenti riceveranno un libro di testo, un blocknotes, penna e quant’altro possa loro servire per seguire il corso. I libri andranno restituiti, il resto, compreso il materiale che gli Insegnanti prepareranno, potra’ essere tenuto dagli studenti.
Cosa ricevono gli studenti all’arrivo? Il “Welcome Kit” include il “Manuale dello Studente”, cartine (NYC, subway, Wagner College ...), blocknotes, informazioni generali, numeri di emergenza ed inoltre la loro tessera di riconoscimento, “Unlimited Metrocard” (tessera per trasporti urbani, illimitata), “Meal Card” (tessera elettronica per accedere alla mensa), Chiave elettronica della stanza, password per l’accesso a qualsiasi computer a Wagner College.
Come si svolgono le attivita’ sportive? Che strutture ci sono?
Chi guida gli studenti durante lo svolgimento delle attivita’ sportive? Emerald a Wagner offre eccezionali strutture sportive: piscina coperta, campi da basketball, campi da calcio e baseball, da tennis (ma per questi dovete portarvi la vostra racchetta e palline). Il nostro personale accompagnera’ gli studenti e li aiutera’ ad organizzarsi durante questo tempo dedicato allo sport. Inoltre offriranno – a chi lo vorra’ – la possibilita’ di scoprire i “veri sports Americani”, baseball e football.
Emerald a Wagner offre anche un super-qualificato Soccer Camp del Milan AC. L’accesso a tutte le strutture ed attivita’ sportive e’ gratuito ad eccezione del Milan Soccer Camp che e’ un programma a se’. In caso di bisogno/emergenza c’e’ sempre qualcuno di Emerald reperibile?
C’e’ un numero per le emergenze? Certamente! 24 ore al giorno. Si, verra’ dato un numero per le emergenze (ed anche altri numeri utili) a studenti e group leaders.
Avete un “numero d’emergenza” da passare alle famiglia?
Qual e’ il modo migliore per le famiglie per sentirsi con i figli?Fornite delle sim cards agli accompagnatori cosi che le famiglie possano chiamare? Si, a momento debito forniamo un “numero d’emergenza” ed altri numeri utili.
No, non consegnamo sim cards ai capi gruppo. Il nostro numero di telefono a Wagner e’ 718 420 4307. Potrete chiamarci in qualsiasi momento, tuttavia e’ improbabile che facendolo siate in grado di mettervi in comunicazione con i vostri figli perche’ anche se il campus non e’ enorme sara’ quasi impossibile rintracciare al volo i vostri familiari. L’email resta il metodo piu’ semplice: gli studenti avranno costantemente libero accesso all’email. Qual e’ il modo piu’ economico e ragionevole per chiamarsi al telefono? Come funzionano i cellulari? Quali? Cellulari a tre bande funzionano. Tuttavia il modo piu’ economico per chiamare l’Europa e’ comprare carte telefoniche. Il nostro personale dara’ assistenza a chiunque lo chieda su queste cose.
Come sono distribuiti ragazzi e ragazze nei dorms? Ragazzi e ragazze saranno sempre alloggiati su piani differenti. Gli insegnanti/capi gruppo dovrebbero stare al piano con i ragazzi/ragazze che accompagnano per aiutare a mantenere ordine e silenzio.
Quali sono gli orari delle lezioni? Avete un insegnante singolo o piu’ insegnanti? Dal Lunedi al Venerdi, dalle 9 alle 12, sempre con lo stesso Insegnante.
Talvolta la Direttrice degli Studi o il Direttore Generale visiteranno la classe, talvolta due insegnanti lavoreranno insieme per svolgere un’attivita’ speciale. Come e’ e come avviene il trasferimento dal Wagner College a Manhattan? Cinque minuti per arrivare alla fermata del bus. Bus fino al ferry. Il ferry ti porta a Manhattan attraversando un braccio d’acqua spettacolare tra il ponte di Verrazano, e le isole Liberty ed Ellis, tra l’oceano la foce dell’Hudson e dell’East River.
Dal Campus a Manhattan ci vorra’ grossomodo un’ora, che e’ ‘un niente” per i parametri di New York. Poi da Downtown Manhattan dipendera’ da dove il gruppo abbia in programma di recarsi. NYC e’ una citta’ grande ...e di solito le scuole di lingua sono situate fuori dall’area metropolitana. Cosi i gruppi sanno dall’inizio che andranno – diciamo – due volte la settimana a visitare Manhattan. A Emerald Wagner la storia e’ diversa: vedi Manhattan e la baia di NYC da tutte le finestre ...e vuoi andarci! L’Emerald New York rilascia Diplomi? Si, essendo una Scuola riconosciuta dal Board of Education dello Stato di New York, Emerald rilascia Diplomi a tutti coloro che frequenano i suoi corsi.
Che cos’e’ non incluso nel prezzo di iscrizione? Cosa gli studenti dovranno pagare di extra? Tutto quello che e’ elencato – dalla scuola, vitto e alloggio, trasporti, fino alle attivita’ indicate – e’ incluso. Teoricamente parlando gli studenti non avranno bisogno di un dollaro aggiuntivo per trascorrere il loro tempo a NYC.
Con quale frequenza gli studenti lasceranno il campus per andare a svolgere visite?
Molto spesso. Una bozza di programma verra’ inviata a tutti i capi gruppo per essere esaminata, discussa e rimodellata in base ai lolro desideri ed aspettative. In ogni caso gli studenti trascorreranno al massimo due pomeriggi e serate al College (a meno che chiedano di trascorrerci piu’ tempo – cosa sempre possibile). Le attivita’ pomeridiane saranno soprattutto sportive, mentre nelle serate offriremo musica dal vivo (blues, jazz etc.), canto insieme (e karaoke), presentazioni su pubblicita’ televisiva e su NYC, ballo ...
Offrite escursioni di tutta la giornata? Dove? A quale costo? Si, anche se, obiettivamente parlando, NYC ha cosi tanto da offrire ...
Si possono organizzare visite a Philadelphia, Woodbury Commons Outlet, Upstate New York (valle del fiume Hudson), Harlem per una Messa Gospel, lo Zoo del Bronx... Il costo dipendera’ dal numero dei partecipanti e dal periodo.
